I am at the stage where I just catch a very few moths of the same few species yet my mate down the road keeps showing me stuff like Pale Pinnion that keeps me plugging away in the hope of something better. Tonight looks like the last warm night for a while though.

I'm getting a few bits, latest ever Willow Beauty (fresh looking) last night plus 2 Angle Shades, 2 Black Rustic, Red Green Carpet, Red-line Quaker, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Vine's Rustic and a Barred Sallow.

You got Dotted Chestnut the other day which I've never had.

A low temperature of 14.1c on Friday night gave me high hopes of a decent number of moths, however, the wind got up a bit so only 4 moths of 4 species in the end. 3 were NFY though, November agg, Juniper Carpet and Garden Rose Tortrix. The other moth was a Streak. A Silver Y was nectaring on the buddleia last night as well.

I have, I don't think they're (much) any bigger than Red Underwing or even Old Lady?

Dipped into the forum tonight and this thread which continues to inform & entertain. I still have good intentions on various updates but in the meantime, I had the opportunity to compare Clifden Nonpareil & Red Underwing on Thursday night at one of my regular survey sites on my patch. Both appeared to be males. Phone pic attached. The last week has been yielding about 90 moths per night with 20+ species to the garden actinic. A pleasant boost with several nice autumn species including Merveille du Jour.

Just two moths last nights as it's turned cold again, Blair's Shoulder-knot and Red-line Quaker.

This is a new micro for me, Eudonia angustea, Narrow-winged Grey, looks like someone is working hard at giving micros, common names?

Only 4 moths on Saturday morning, but as one of them was my 3rd Merveille du Jour of the year I'll not complain (the others were 2 Common Marbled Carpets & a Figure of Eight). Quite glad there weren't many, meant we could get away for the Stint on good time!

Yellow-line Quaker (2 of) NFY this morning, also Blair's Shoulder-knot, Black Rustic, Barred Sallow and a couple of Beaded Chestnut.

First garden trap since returning from Shetland last night: just four moths, 3 Large YUW and a Black Rustic that was NFY.

Picked up Small Wainscot, Autumnal Moth and Haworth's Minor (tick) during birding in the field on Mainland Shetland over the last fortnight.

My fourth & fifth Merveilles du Jour of the year last night, one of which stopped on the window, giving me a different angle from which to photograph it. Also 4 November aggs, Yellow-line Quaker, Barred Sallow and a NFY Green-brindled Crescent, a dark individual.

Another modest but tidy autumn haul last night. A Merveille du Jour actually made it all the way into the trap for the first time. Also 2 each of Yellow-line Quaker, Red-green Carpet & Green-brindled Crescent, Beaded Chestnut and a Pug of some sort - Common?

Caught out by early rain this morning, but I'll get to that in a minute.

Yesterday morning's small haul was a Cypress Carpet, 4 Box Moths, a Lunar Underwing, a Lesser and 2 Large YUW, 2 Red-green Carpet and a Grey Pine Carpet.

Last night I looked out of the window and saw a goodie on the other side so bolted out with a pot and seconds later a Merveille du Jour (NFY) was in the fridge. This morning I looked out from the bedroom and it was raining: I remain convinced that when the Met Office says <5% chance of rain it won't but anything higher, even 10%, means it absolutely will! A quick whiz through added another Lesser and 3 Large YUW, a Dark Sword-grass NFY, and singles of Box Moth, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Angle Shades.

So I'll keep going for the moment.

I'll be trapping for the next 3 weeks until the GMS summer scheme ends. I don't do the winter scheme, I just trap on nights I think I may have a decent chance of catching something between the end of one summer scheme and the start of the next. If I'm lucky, that means the trap will be out twice during that 16 weeks!

Last night the temperature dropped to 5.1c, it was forecast to go lower, so only 2 moths, both new for the year though. A Chestnut and a really fresh Angle Shades.

Tempted by a slightly milder night last night, my return was a single November moth agg.

Not much last night, clear the first half of the night the problem I suspect. One Lesser YUW, two Large YUW and the saving grace a Chestnut (NFY).

Could that perhaps be a not-very-dark Dark Chestnut?
