I never new that the apostlebirds were that close, I guess because the first time I saw them they were a reasonable way out and I'd never really heard anything about them before, that's pretty cool though. Their family groups are amazing, and the sounds they make, they're not sweet sounds at all, it's little rough growling and squeaky sounds, as they bicker and chatter amongst each other. Similar to the babblers, yes :) Hopefully I'll manage to get a sacred kingfisher at some point. Seems like a pretty cool bird. Spinebills are very cool, really striking markings, and that beak just seems like it would get in the way! I'm not familiar with their call however. You are right, there is something about mistletoebirds, one day they're there, and the next, they're just not. It seems that around the time that our neighbours bush start flowering, that's when they start to hang around, and other times, it's random but highly infrequent. I guess the mistletoe around here has only just started flowering again too, but where do they go when it's not flowering? Also, your description of their call as a squeaky toy call is very apt, fits perfectly. I'll never forget their call now ;)
