If the colour rendition is accurate (and it is big if in that part of the world) they look to be Heuglin's - the commonest of the darker backed gulls. I would have expected to see a predominance of Steppe Gulls - hence my comment.

Thanks, Muppit. I enclose another picture of the gulls. They certainly look very large and very dark above.
