Thanks people :-) Hobbes - technically it was Bedfordshire not Hertfordshire, didn't realise I'd gone over the border! The first time he flew over it was straight head-on towards me and I thought it was another Heron, by the time realised it was too small for a Heron, grabbed the camera and turned it on it was overhead and disappearing behind the trees behind me. I fired off a couple of not-very-good "rear-view" shots as he retreated in the hope of something to ID it with. I zoomed in on the pics in the camera and guessed at Hen Harrier as that seemed to fit best. I kept a close eye out for his return for an hour but no sign. Then a little while later I was chatting with another angler when all of a sudden a dozen or so gulls that were sat on the water just took off as one and I said "Something's spooked them I wonder if it's back" Straight away we spotted him coming down the lake towards us and I managed 4 quick shots before he disappeared over the trees behind us. Pics here http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/390908/limit/recent http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/390909/limit/recent
