Thanks CWPbirder, saw the bird no problem and in a lovely setting. The bird remained distant until a helicopter came over and pushed it towards me and then it flew right over my head

Blenheim and Otmoor 21/09/09

Bored of the local patch I thought I'd have a crack at the gull and Egret.

At Blenheim pretty early and Sabines nice and easy to find of the main lake. It flew around for a bit and then to the very south arm of the lake and difficult to view. c200 hirrundines dropped in and though I didn't go through every one all I looked at were Sand martin.
On Queen lake there was c20 Wigeon, a few Pochard, c30 Shoveller, a female Pintail and a Shellduck. I saw the Whitefronts it will be interesting to what LGRE makes of these as they could be wild Paciffic Whitefronted Geese. I just assumed they were plastic along with the 10 Snow geese, 8 Egyptian and a hybrid.

Over at Otmoor the 2 Marsh harriers were seen on the closes with plenty of Meadow pipits and a Golden plover heard overhead. As usual Cetti's were singing strongly along the bridal path and a Water rail calling from the ditch. A hobby was hawking over the reedbed but pushed away by a female Sparrowhawk. A single Snipe was roosting left of the second screen a a Reed warbler feeding in front of the screen. On the way back a male Stonechat was feeding along the hedgerow before the corner. A Little egret flew across the reedbed at the first screen. At this point I picked up a pale juvenile Buzzard that may get confused with Rough legged - it almost caught me out. There was now 2 Hobbies hawking over Greenways but unfortunately no sign of the big white egret.

Cheers
Gareth

Grimsbury reservoir 22/09/09

It would seem I slagged off my patch a bit pre-maturely yesturday!

08:10 there was 2 juvenile BLACK TERNs - a bird I have been willing for all year! I watched them feeding til 09:20 when 4 Common gulls came in and chased the terns all around untill they left high to the south.

Also a juvenile Whinchat along the ditch in the cattle field.

Happy days :t:

I was going to go for the Sabine's tomorrow. It keeps coming on the pager saying reduced admission prices after 4pm. How long does it remain open for after 4pm ?. Also is the lake obvious when you get there. I have never been there and any info wouold be appreciated.

I got in free both days last weekend - there are Public Rights of way through the grounds, there's a gate into the park not far from the entrance in Woodstock - park in the town and ask!!

Saw the Gull on Sunday.

Does anyone happen to know whether the Yankee Wigeon is still at Sonning Eye?

thanks

I saw it last Weds (16th), late in the day. It was flushed (by a boat I think which was out of view). I didnt see it come back down, but I'm sure it was reported the next day. Might be worth a punt. The Sabine's is still nearby.

Btw if you go don't park inside the barrier at the start of the track. Three cars were locked in as it went dark when I was there.

Sabine's gull is still at Blenheim - if anyone still hasn't seen it, what are you playing at?!!

If anyone says they cant drive I could be persuaded to offer lifts locally.

Hoping to see this tomorrow (Sat). It's not been reported today but no negative report either so hopefully still around. I assume its generally being reported by someone who works there?

Hi,
I have just moved up to Newbury and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can see Red Kites in early morning light or late afternoon. I went to Aston Rowant last weekend to photograph Kites but they didn't arrive till the light was very harsh.

thanks for any info

The Sabine's gull is still present and apparently is patial to a bit of cake!
2 Rock pipits were at Farmoor today along the causeway.

I'm not too hot on Red kite sites for specific needs like photography, but I'm sure someone may offer some help. There are also a few threads just for Red kites around on here too.

Good game boys, good game!
Dipped on the Sab's gull at Blenheim today. Yellow and Grey Wagtail plus Kingfisher were some consolation, but not much for a 15 mile round bike trip! Where is it supposed to be hanging about? I watched the smaller lake with the largest proportion of the activity quite thoroughly, and scoped the large one as I didn't have time to walk round it, but no joy.

I had a similar experience on Saturday; spent a good 3-4 hours searching, I reckon its moved on. According to someone I was chatting to it was never seen on the smaller lake (where the majority of gulls were), it was on the larger lake. However, I searched the larger lake right down to the end and checked every gull on it (no more than 20 in total). Had a Peregrine and a Kingfisher but they didnt make up for it!

Well according to Gareth's post it was there yesterday... perhaps there is a specific time when it is easier to see? I'd love to see the bird, but couldn't face another dip!

Another Blenheim find for Phil Barnett of 5 Greenland White-fronted Geese today.

Report from RBA of a probable Azorean Yellow legged Gull has seen on fields near Appleford SU521920 and SU535925. Also seen at Appleford Pit SU522928. (2nd day).

Getting to Blenheim by bus & avoiding the entrance fee

For future reference for those birders without a car who need to get to Blenheim from Oxford to see whatever Phil Barnett turns up next, there is a very good bus service (the S3) which goes from central Oxford all the way to Woodstock in about 20 minutes for about a fiver round trip. I used it myself the day the Sab. turned up and I found myself without a car.

As far as avoiding the entry fee is concerned, there is a gate a few minutes walk from the town centre: follow the main road north through the town centre and down the hill. At the bottom of the hill before the road starts to climb up again there is a small stream and a zebra crossing with some scrub and small trees on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side of the road there is a large double green gate. Go in through here (I know it looks private but it's actually fine) and there's a small side gate that lets you into the park. There are other free gates but this is the most convenient one.

Hope this helps

probable Azorean Gull

Does anyone what time the probable Azorean Gull was seen today and is there any access to the local rubbish pit?
