Crap Birder
Stumbled across this a few days ago in a coastal mixed/mainly coniferous forest in the Charente-Maritime region of mid west France. I forgot to use anything as a size indicator.

Any ideas?

It's a spotted woodpecker - so 3 possibilities for that region, Great, Middle and Lesser it should be identifiable to species from those outer tail feathers - though the pattern does depend on age with the species.
