Paul's 2025 World List (1 Viewer)

Paul Chapman

Well-known member
Having played with a few options, I settled on the following goals for 2025:-

1. Get my 2023 world photo year list completed (finally....) - currently on 9th December 2023 & processing pics for 10th December 2023;

2. Add at least one photo of each species that I have photographed into eBird - 930 species without pics currently but some will be unphotographed - maybe 250 species;

3. Keep an up to date world list in eBird & record my yearlist in eBird throughout the year;

4. Record at least 1,000 bird species in the year;

5. Get my eBird World List through 4,000 species - currently 3,567 species so 433 new species would need to be recorded;

6. Photograph over 400 new bird species worldwide in the year;

7. Get my photographed species in eBird through 3,750 - currently 2,637 species so 1,113 species will need to be added before the end of the year from those already photographed & new species photographed during the year;

8. Get a British & Irish moth list input into BUBO;

9. Record my Britain & Ireland moth list in BUBO throughout the year; &

10. Spend at least twenty nights moth trapping in the field in the year.

This will be my attempt to meet the fourth goal. I have two trips booked being a Cruise with associated birding trips from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles stopping on at least twelve occasions followed by a road trip thereafter to San Franciso (March/April) and a week in Morocco (May) with one main WP target.

It may need some more effort to hit a thousand species in 2025 than the trips planned but I am sure that I will try and arrange something else. (It will almost certainly need something else to hit the fifth to seventh goals but I am not sure how much. Working out the likely outcomes of that Cruise is a little bit mind-bending but I suspect that I will need another big trip to give me maybe 150 more ticks......)

I expect this to be moved to a 2025 Sub-folder in due course.

All the best

Paul

As at the end of 4th January - I have had two trips away but not far to Cheddar & Slimbridge. I did a full day local birding today with 20,000 steps.

Removing the Slimbridge Ross's Goose from my eBird tally which it will be once reviewed (& a shame that I cannot mark it as an Escapee rather than the automatic Provisional)....

Highlight since my last post was some further time with the Purple Sandpiper in some sunshine. I then had some commitments in Essex but kept a few additions going and today travelled back to Clevedon via a Red-necked Grebe in the Colne Valley. Returning to Clevedon with 15 minutes of daylight, I connected with an apparent adult female Black Redstart at Clevedon Pier.

A few pics - Corn Bunting, Red Kite, Red-legged Partridge, Cattle Egrets & Slavonian Grebe.

eBird tells me that Cetti's Warbler and Blackcap are by far the commonest local species that I still need for the year.

All the best

A slight surprise to get some of my other birding targets for the year under way as early as January with a day twitch to the Netherlands albeit a very grey day extremely poor for photography :-

I have spent more time staring at computers than birding since the Netherlands but with some potential upsides. Preparations advanced for my cruise from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles (via Puerto Madryn, Falkland Islands, Usuhuaia, Punta Arenas, Lima, Puntarenas, Cabo San Lucas, etc) from 5th March to 8th April & planning properly underway for the road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco over the following week.

Also arranged 18 days' birding in Southern Peru in July/August & expect to finalise arrangements for a week in Morocco & three or so days in Bulgaria in May & something booked for 2026... Nevertheless, there remain Cattle Egrets, a Black Redstart & Green Sandpiper on my patch & owls at my local rewilding site which have been pleasant distractions from the spreadsheets, checklists, etc:-
