Peru Bird IDs - Chat-Tyrant, Ground-Tyrant, Nightjar and Sandpiper (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions from a recent trip to Peru, if anyone is able to help that would be great!

Firstly a Chat-Tyrant from Wayqecha Biological Station on the Manu Road. Think this one is Crowned Chat-Tyrant but struggling to be sure it's not Golden-browed Chat-Tyrant.

Then a Nightjar, also from Wayqecha, seen at dusk perching by the roadside and sallying out to catch insects. I thought this might be a female Band-winged Nightjar but not certain at all. Swallow-tailed are also known to be around here.

Next is maybe a Rufous-webbed Bush-Tyrant, then a Ground-Tyrant which I think was Taczanowski's Ground-Tyrant? These are both from the Abra Malaga area, in the bottom of the valley downhill from the Polylepis forest.

Lastly a small sandpiper from Pantanos de Villa in Lima. Pretty sure these are Baird's Sandpipers but I'm from the UK so not experienced with this species.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Toby

Yes, Baird's sandpipers: long wings and nothing to indicate white-rumped sandpiper (bill colour, flank markings).

Chat-tyrant: One clue mentioned in the FG for Bolivia, may or may not be relevant for this area of Peru is that the supercilium is narrower and especially behind the eye on Golden-browed than on Crowned. I see this as a narrow one. Check photos to see if this also holds in this area.

I agree with your IDs but wonder about the nightjar. On balance I think tail pattern favours band-winged although relative tail : wing length favours swallow-tailed (afaics both species have variable plumage)

(Chat tyrant is crowned in part due to back colour)
