Coots and wigeon is good for two! One of the others is a 'lifer' for me, not a rarity, just one I had never 'ticked'

Just back in from my inaugural ringing session. 51 birds processed and 11 species in all. Not bad for a green area in the middle of Redditch!
This has to be the most rewarding hobby known to man - absolutely brilliant.
This isn't really a throw away photo, but let's see who can identify these two...

Thanks for that stab.
Just to let you know, I trained at RAF Wyton and did three tours at RAF Brampton.
My first two mortgaged properties were in Huntingdon, too.
So, Cambs is no stranger to me.

Actually Pam, you're 100% correct... for one of them. One is indeed a (brackets) female 1st year Lesser Whitethroat.
Isn't she beautiful.
I've included another shot of the other one (and remembered to change the file name!)... which should help to ID it.

Allula and secondaries point to female Whitethroat for the brown one. Weird how we can tell a bird 'in the field' by jizz and conformity, but seeing one in the hand is so difficult.

Bingo

Whitethroat and lesser - hence why I put them in a comparative picture (not that they're at all similar, bar names).

Yes, that was what I found yesterday, with this very bird.
I approached the net in which it has hanging and about 20 yds away I said to myself, "Hey a Whitethroat".
By the time I was up next to it, I all I could say was an "LBJ".
It's a totally new world, and I don't ever recall being so excited about a new aspect of a hobby.
Next week, they're coming up to our fields with a view to ringing there!

Well done m8, over to you squire.

Great hobby you have taken up Simon. I bet you could not believe just how big those little birds feet are till you started handling them.

How are all of you on sillouettes?

I'm getting Passerine - Hirundinidae feelings here. So it probably isn't. But let's go for a Swallow taken from you car at the weekend.

Yes m8, they are oddly large whilst being really delicate.
What surprised me was how feisty Blue Tits are - the other species just let you get on with it, except the wrens that wriggle like nobody's business. But the BTs would peck your hand off if they were capable!
