I saw this bird at a lake near me, in Northern NJ, on 12/16/17. I thought it was Pied-Billed Grebe, but it was too large. I than thought Ring-Necked Duck, but it seemed too light. Could you give me the final verdict? It seemed significantly smaller than the Common Mergansers that passed it. It is important to note that Pied-billed Grebe was reported earlier that day.

Doesn't look like a grebe to me, but like a small duck, possibly an Aythya but a bit hard to tell from these images. If not a female RND then perhaps female Redhead?
