I have been asked to find out what this plant is.

It is spreading fairly quickly and apparently it has yellow flowers in the summer.

Any info would be very much appreciated.

Hi Howard, it looks like Hypericum calycinum. Described by the RHS as a garden thug, although a good plant for ground cover in difficult, shady places.

I agree with calycinum. Aka Rose of Sharon, aka Great St Johns Wort. Impressive flowers for such a shade-tolerant plant, but spreads rapidly via underground shoots and takes over the whole border of left alone. Takes a lot of patience to eradicate if like me you don't use weedkillers - regular weeding-out of new shoots is required after removing the plants. Or alternatively if you want to keep it you'll need to weed the edge of the growing area regularly to stop it spreading further than you want it to.
