A deal popped up, so I decided to try some lightweight 8x32s....the Zeiss Terra ED. With caps they're about 18oz. They're not pocket sized but only a few ounces heavier than my Bushnell 7x26 and about half the weight of my main glasses, older Nikon LX 8x42. Today I tried birding with the Zeiss at a nearby wetland area. It was overcast, occasionally brightening until shadows were visible but the sun never quite came out. I compared them to several of my other binos and liked a lot of things about them. The handling is great; somehow when I raise them to my eyes I find I'm right on the bird. The heft is "just right", with just enough mass to give confidence and stability. Focusing is terrific. Optical performance is pretty good, excellent I'd say for what I paid ($250 on sale). But I'm disappointed in the eye relief. Zeiss specifies 16.5mm, but with the eyecups retracted all the way I have to push them pretty hard into my spectacles to see the whole field, and even then can only barely manage it. Is this typical of Zeiss? The 8x25 Terra which I'd still like to try is listed with 16mm eye relief, only 0.5mm less but with the 8x32 I have literally none to spare. In fact I'm not even sure I'm satisfied with the 8x32 Terra on this count. The Opticron Discovery is another ultralight 8x32. Eye relief is specified at 17mm but some reviews state that figure is optimistic. The Opticron Traveler would be another candidate but the 331ft field is starting to get tunnel-like.... The search continues!
