Hee-hee. o:D Fair play ! At least you lived to bird another day Alan! I drove up from the midlands and was there yesterday. newbiggin is a bigger area than you imagine, but thanks to excellent info/directions from 3 local birders yesterday when i arrived about noon, i enjoyed excellent views of the Wryneck from the mound in the bushes (as well as a Willow warbler in the same bushes that had a yellow throat and very white underparts - not sure how common this is....more like wood warbler colouration but it wasnt that). Saw plenty of Redstarts & Wheatear, 2 Whinchats, and at the coppice I eventually saw the cracking male RB flycatcher. Not a new bird for me but it felt like it! Also juv Pied Flys, SpotFlys, Blackcap, Willow Warblers, Garden Warbler and a 2nd Wryneck being watched by a Sparrowhawk. I didnt leave til 3pm so had little time for other goodies. I had not got a clue where the quarry was that held the Subalpine. But I did check out Whitley Bay Cemetary, Brier Dene, and then lovely Tynecastle where I got my 3rd Wryneck of the day. Got home at 9.30pm! Knackered today. Perhaps I should have gone for the Bairds Sandpiper in Cambs which would have been alifer. But the Wrynecks and especially the RB Flycatcher were very special birds for me.
