Predictions (1 Viewer)

Ashley beolens

Breeding the next generation of birders.
With the weather in the UK taking a turn (from beingmild to windy and wet), the time of year and the arrival of the first few Hoopoe, I am predicting the start of migration, this weekend, What I thought I would ask is what (if any) summer migrants will turn up?

My prediction is the obvious Sand martins and possibly a comic tern or two.

Anyone else?:king:

I'll stick my neck out and say Ring Ouzel, Yellow Wag & Redstart.

And I'll be looking for them ;)

In an attempt to break the anglocentric shackles of this thread :) I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I'm going to find a Mediterranean Gull in Iceland tomorrow, a national first no less! OK, returning to reality, I'll be happy to find my first Lesser Black-backed Gull of the year tomorrow.

Do your Wheatears arrive so earlier? They breed commonly here but don't start arriving until mid to late April.

Sorry Edward and anyone who feels left out by my thread, but tough you should all move to the UK then you can join in8-P

No I am sorry really, but I am only really familiar with the timing of birds in the UK migration wise, and the weather that can bring them in.

We start getting our first migrants end of Feb begining of March, I dare say some of your wheatears pass through Britain on their way, so we are likely to get them earlier.

Please feel free to post other countries predictions although I can't say I will be able to agree or disagree with you!

Good birding:hippy:

Anglocentric shackles ? Can you get them from Ann Summers ?

There are at least 20 Wheatear records nationally from the first half of February, but they more commonly arrive in early March.

Hi Ashley I wasn't really being serious about being left out (as you well know!).
Anyway it's right what you say, a huge number of our birds pass through Britain on their way north, and of course many of them winter with you. Our first migrant passerine is Meadow Pipit, first week of April. Gulls first, phalaropes last is the basic order here.

Good luck with the weekend's birding, look forward to hearing about it on Monday!

Edward

I only wish I could be out finding the birds myself but as I have to work I can update this as to the first migrants I hear of.

Edward I hope you find your Med gull.

It's lashing with rain here at the moment - hopefully that'll make the little dears keep their heads down until tomorrow morning.

Tony

I have to tell you that a Wheatear was reprted at Pilling Lane Ends in Lancashire on Wednesday. Just thought that you would like to know that. Plus a Garganey, on the same day, in Sussex near to Newhaven
