Prion, Christchurch, NZ (1 Viewer)

Gregor Tims
I found this Prion exhausted at the beach today. Sadly I only had my phone for a camera so these are the best shots I could get. It looks most like an Antarctic to me on account of the bill- took thick and long for fairy and too thin for Broad-billed. Can anyone help? Cheers!

With that long bill and extensive supercilium broadening behind the eye I'd be tending to Slender-billed Prion

Gregor Tims
Thanks MJH, that certainly looks possible too. I'm now leaning towards either Slender-billed or Antarctic. I've attached an attempt at lightening one of the images.

Thanks again! prion 2.jpeg

Prions can be tricky without excellent photographs at several angles!

Any prion is exceptional on the beach of course, but the recent weather appears to have displaced some birds further north / inshore than they would normally be. Light mantled and Sooty Albatross off one pelagic off Tassie and an unbelievable Antarctic Petrel on an inshore lake in Western Victoria 😮

If you post on the world pelagic bird group they will I'm sure provide opinions on ID! Pelagics. Seabirds birding worldwide

Cheers MJH, I'll post it in there now! Amazingly it's my second Prion on a Canterbury beach in the last few months, with a Broad-billed in December as well.
