R7 - Shipping Notice vs Backorder - first impressions from the lucky few (1 Viewer)

First try using the eye detect and pretty impressed. It just locked onto the eye of the Collared Dove and ignored the leaf next to it, it also would ignore thin branches across the birds head to lock onto the eye. My 7Dmk2 would just want to focus on the leaves or branches. Test one then shows impressive camera software for bird detection

Quick question: are people forking out for the 300mb SD cards or can you get by with the 170mb cards that are 20% of the price : I tend to shoot in bursts of 4-6 images then break and repeat on the R6 and the slower cards work fine

I'm doing 300mb but I do aircraft stuff as well and for things like Red Arrows opposition cross-overs you need a long burst capability (several seconds anyway!) I do sometimes machine-gun dragonflies in flight as well.

I am using 170mb SD cards and find this is fine in 4-6 bursts at 15fps!

This Malachie Kingfisher taken with the R7, 1.4x extender, adapter and the canon 100-400mm mk2 lens.

Saw no noticable image quality drop in using the extender with the adapter for the lens, granted it was good light though.

However when shooting a turaco sat in a tree with the eye detect off as the camera just could not find the bird, the single centre focusing point (far to big in my opinion) still would not pick up the bird and would keep attempt to focus on the brighter gaps in leaves etc around the bird, I think the 7Dm2 would have done a much better job in that instance as the focusing point is smaller. I had to try and resort to manual focus but by the time I had switched lens the manual and tried to recompose image the bird had moved so I lost the shot.

I think the R7 in many instance is a big improvement over the 7Dmk2 but in others not so much.

Captured this Curlew in-flight with the R7 and RF 800mm f11 lens. BIF is not easy with the effective 1280mm field of view as it can be difficult to find the bird in the viewfinder but if you do find it the R7 latches on no problem. Click on image to see it all.
