Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire (5 Viewers)

A female was seen at Belvide and Gailey on New Years Day this year, but don't mention that too loudly to some Gailey patchers on here. Mind you, they've made up for that since then. :t:

Just looking through "The New Birds of the West Midlands" makes interesting reading. There's more than you think, but that's mainly due to an influx in 1993. That consisted of 13 records of 45 birds, but that's the whole WMBC region, including W*r*ickshire and W*rc*stershire. But Tittesworth had 8 and Chasewater had 2.

1948 - 1978, 18 records with Chasewater having 10 of those. Previously the only sites have been Chasewater, Blithfield, Tittesworth and Copmere. So a Rudyard tick if nothing else.

Hi guys - as a non-Staffs birder, could someone please give me an idea of how many previous county records there have been, and when the last one was?

Many thanks in advance,

Hi Richard - You forgot the drake at Westport (photographed) cant remember the year.

Pallid Harrier ?

Just seen the latest BBRC Work in Progress file which includes reference to a Pallid Harrier at Tatenhill airfield, Needwood on the 26th May 2010. Cant find a reference to any harrier species in Staffs on that date; anyone know any more?

Marsh Sandpiper ?

Likewise the BBRC WiP file also includes a Marsh Sandpiper at Blithfield on the 4th August 2011 (one found in Lincs on the same day). Cant find a mention of this or a potential confusion species (say Greenshank) at Blithfield during this period.

26TH MAY 2010 On BBRC site not 2011 , but still not heard about it before.
And as for Marsh Sand you know what these Blithfield Birders are like ;);)

Sorry - mistype on my behalf; was getting too excited about all the good birds I must have missed!! :-O

Staffs Birders would get more than excited with birds like that on our patch .
Just remembering back to the Marsh Sand at Belvide way back in June 1974 possibly older than most of you Staffs birders ....;););););)

Mmmmm and just what are Blithfield Birders like then?

Did hear rumours about this bird a week after the event, I will not publish the observers name without permission, but it was heard to call in Tad Bay but not seen after despite searching by observer?

As for the Pallid, isn't Needwood on a certain Mr Wallace's patch.....

Yep Mart you are spot on with the Needwood assumption...I'm pretty sure that one won't get passed the BOU...;)

Very mobile yday, it had been seen AM on the pontoons but when I arrived at lunch it hadn't been seen for 2hrs! I stayed another hour and only saw it once in flight heading for the island but couldn't relocate it...right little bugger!

Drake Smew - Middleton Lakes on Wetland Walk

Hi Josh

As you can see plenty of records but this is only the second 'long stayer' in Staffs in the 25 years I've been birding. The previous one was a female at Chasewater some year after 97. The bird this year on the 1st only ditched down at Belvide briefly then went again briefly to Gailey...but we didn't find that out until several days later...:C

Cheers

Ian

My dad has just relayed a report from his mate about waxwings at the bottom of Reginald Mitchell Way seen this morning. I didn't get provided with any more information than that I am afraid.
