Rare and Scarce Birds in Warwickshire (1 Viewer)

There was a buzz around earlswood as there was a gathering of watchers looking for the heron.
I was on site from around 4PM, and by the time i left at 9:10 (or somthing similar) i was very cold with wind chill.
A walk around the entire lake complex and springbrook lane saw practically nothing, just common tern and the long staying drk Mandarin, which after 3 weeks, im getting a bit bored of. but when returning to the C'way there were lots of people looking, hour after hour passed and people slowly left. there was 7 of us left by 8:20, and our reward was to see the Ad Night Heron fly over from the north giving great views as it flew, the group split, and our group ( Matt G, Andy P, my dad, me) decided to walk the east side of windmill pool hoping it had landed in the willows at the bottom of the pool, however it hadent, we had 2 Cuckoo to the south of the pool, however we did not venture away from the tarmac path as to not desturb any birds that were in there, heron or otherwhys.

Cheers to Matt for the amazing find, and being great company, Much deserved patch bird mate, well done, Keep it up

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
The Night Heron flew down Windmill Pool and then over the causeway at 9:17 tonight; unfortunately most birders have already left the site.

Yes Matt browner in the ear coverts as with Ringed (nominate) and LRP, also all the 'black' areas are generally less bold black indispersed with brown.

Thanks John.

The Night Heron flew towards the canal this evening, and since it's flown from that direction on all 3 mornings I've seen it, there seems a really good chance it will fly over the causeway again tomorrow morning (if still at Earlswood).

The Night Heron was indeed seen in flight over the Windmill Pool at Earlswood this evening. There were a good number of Swift hawking low over the water and causeway with good close views plus three Dunlin present on the shingle patch on Engine Pool. Also saw 2 Jay.

Chilly evening with the breeze but good to see the Night Heron again.

The Night Heron gave a fly-past at c.8.15 last night. It came from the direction of Terry's Pool, flew the length of Engine Pool and over Valley Road before drifting right and dropping down below the trees. Despite staying until 10.00 I had no further views, but there were a few who stayed beyond that time.

Night Heron put in a similar performance tonight as last night, flew the length of Engine Pool at 8.25 pm,over Valley road and dropped out of sight beyond the adjacent trees.Much kudos to Matt for his well deserved find after his meticulous patch work.

Tonight was a repeat performance only it was two minutes earlier flying over at 8. 23 pm. It was bitterley cold in a strong westerly wind but fortunately no rain. The light was not brilliant but the bird flew so close and low that it was easy to see its features. For the brave six souls who witnessd it, it was a magical 30 seconds. Again, congratulations and thanks to all involved in bringing this terrific bird to our notice.

The Night Heron showed well in flight again this evening over Earlswood Lakes. Had great views. Also present were lots of swift hawking, I had a count of 5 Common Tern and also heard a Cuckoo.

I would like to give this Heron a visit over the weekend. Could someone confirm if all of this weeks sightings of it flying over have all been from the causeway? If not where is the best vantage point?

It seems to be getting into a regular pattern which always makes the chance of a sighting higher.

The causeway is the place to be Gareth, flying in from Terry's Pool, across Engine Pool towards the causeway. The causeway affords a panoramic view should the Heron come in from a different direction.Good luck

No sign of the Earlswood Night Heron during 3+ hours at the causeway yesterday evening, but doesn't mean it's gone (scrubland wasn't checked).

I wonder if anyone's seen a tail-less Common Tern (tail regrowing in last week or so) locally this year? One which must be the same bird has been seen at Upton Warren, Earlswood and Bittell. It seems a good opportunity to see how far local birds move about.

Bit like that Collared Pratincole with half a tail that spent 2 days at Draycote then went to Earls Barton & then Norfolk.

RBA are reporting a CORNCRAKE calling from a bean field near Flecknoe at the Flecknoe turn, just off the A425 Daventry - Southam Road. Reported as calling early yesterday evening.

NOW REPORTED AS ERRONOUS!!!
