A colony of rare wasps could halt a long-awaited multi-million-pound redevelopment scheme designed to transform a village. Plans for a new school, hundreds of homes and community facilities in Red Lodge, near Mildenhall, have been on the drawing board for more than 10 years. But they might now have to be completely revised if English Nature decides to protect the wasps' habitat by applying for the area to be designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Forest Heath district councilor Allan Duncan reacted angrily to the move, which could see the site for the school moved from Turnpike Road onto Warren Road, away from the village centre.
