There are still large numbers of Red-breasted Geese being seen around Hungary this 2011-12 winter. Having seen a flock of 56 myself at Apaj 30 km south-east of Budapest on 2nd January 2012, there are now reports of a flock of over 100 elsewhere.
Whilst Hungary normally gets small groups and singletons every winter, and people generally know that Bulgaria is the place to visit to see them at this time of year, this winter has been unusual. It may be that the mild winter has affected movement, as there is more unfrozen water around than usual, and fields are also not so badly affected by ground frost, so grazing will be easier.
