Hi all,

See below, a message from Paddy Sheridan of the BirdWatch Ireland Kildare Branch...

All the best,
Niall

"We at Birdwatch Kildare are currently in the process of compiling an official county bird list. To the best of our knowledge no list of this type exists. We are aiming to get a comprehensive history of every bird species that has visited Kildare, be they old or new records. For example, when did you last hear a Corncrake or when did you see your first Buzzard etc?

While we have no coastline or mountains and very few lakes in Kildare we do have other good habitats such as bogs, sandpits and woodland. If you think there is a good place in the county worth checking out such as an old disused sandpit, or you have a story or something of interest please let us know.

We are particularly looking for the following records in each section. Anything about any bird no matter how insignificant you may think it is would be important for our records.

Old: Corncrake, Corn Bunting, Red Grouse, Grey Partridge etc
New: Great Spotted Woodpecker, Little Egret, Buzzard etc.
Rare: Hobby, Osprey, American Waders etc.
Rare Breeding: Curlew, Lapwing, Nightjar, Peregrine, Heroneries etc.
Birds of Prey: Red Kite, Kestrel, Hen Harrier, Marsh Harrier etc.
Owls: Barn Owl, Long Eared Owl, Short Eared Owl
Waders: All types including Oystercatcher, Greenshank, etc.
Ducks: All species

Gulls: All species
Swans: Whooper & Bewicks
Geese: All species
Sea Birds: Terns, Auks, etc. which turn up unexpectedly, blown off course or found dead.
Migrants: Passing through such as Black Redstart, Green Sandpiper, Whimbrel, etc.
High Counts : Yellowhammer, Finches, Starlings etc.

Submit all records to:
By Post: Paddy Sheridan, Ballyvoneen, Enfield, Co. Kildare
Email: [email protected]

Strictest confidentiality will apply to all records submitted especially to those regarding rare breeding bird species.

If you think you can help us it would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Paddy Sheridan"
