Birds feeding elsewhere in the morning, so went out in the afternoon. Recently we have been catching few ringed birds. I think this shows that many ringed birds are staying in the area, but we haven't been catching them because they have been successfully avoiding us by coming in the morning.

Also out on the 22nd (see below) but as not catching assumed disturbance to be minimal. On the 21st we had a foul day - sleet, rain and cold. When I went to feed there were several large flocks flying around and perhaps 200 on the bait cleaning up remains. Difficult to count in conditions with constant moving but at least 300 present, probably 600.

At most just over 60 finches seen, so a steep drop since the 21st. Mainly feeding in wild bird cover with onl small numbers ever landing (very briefly) at the bait.

The skylark was very thin. By wing length (Svenson) it was a male - do they sing so much they starve ? The two stock dove noted below were feeding beside my hide but teased me by landing beside the catching area briefly before leaving.

At most about 130 finches seen, but I just could not get catching right with birds departing when I thought they were settling - just one of those days.

On the 21st I caught a male kestrel in a walk in trap I have outside my back windows where I can keep a close eye on it. The trap is set for grey partridge, a species that is doing really badly so I am keen to monitor them as closely as possible. The kestrel was a real surprise.

Thirteen of those retraps were ringed in previous winters, 9 of which have not been caught this winter. Two of them were ringed in December 2013.

The wild bird cover appears to be less favoured by the birds now, though this afternoon I did disturb a flock of 30-40 in other wild bird cover 800m away.
