We often get a flock feeding at this time of year and wonder if they are migrants passing through - but never have time to catch them. 30+ were present on Friday when I returned from a short absence and with work being well ahead this year I had time to try to catch this morning. The two retraps were ringed in early 2017.

60+ present. Normally at this time of year they feed in fields that have come out of rape. Why not this year ? There was a flock in one such field for a while, the field was then worked and now sown but that doesn't usually stop them.

A few skeins of geese passed over while I was too busy to think about them properly but I suspect they were barnacle - it is a long time since I lived at Caerlaverock :)

Our winter farmland bird mist netting programme has started again, slightly delayed. We are likely to suffer disruption for a while as the two most active ringers are bothe due hernia repairs in the next few weeks.

Even when we used to catch 150+ yellowhammer each winter at this site, we did not catch many before new year. For instance we were asked by GWCT to colour ring yellowhammer to contribute to one of their studies. The protocol required colour ringing from 1st October to 31st December inclusive with a target of 30 birds. We managed 11. While this is an encouraging start to our catching it bears similarities to the situation with linnet - a suggestion that the birds are needing the artificial feed much earlier than usual.

For the first time I can ever remember the number of moths coming to my headtorch was genuinely distracting. I use a yellowish halogen bulb, they did not seem attracted to my companion's bluer LED torch at all. We also had a bat flying close to us but fortunately it did not get caught in a net.

Max 70-80 birds present but the kestrel seemed to be causing major distubance so they were not settling to feed. Kestrel sat on an electricity pole shouting it's head off for ages - we had a pair in early March but the female disappeared during the snow, maybe this male is from that pair now trying to find a new mate.

Mainly forgetting corvids, gulls, non-natives, pigeons and tits.

A goodly list there Mike. Lovely to see so many Tree Sparrows and Dunnocks too.

I'm a bit confused by your date though 8.3.18 would put it in Winter 17-18, would it not?;)

Cheers Mike.

Guess you can't edit your post now - do you want me to change the date on it for you?

Surprised to find a large linnet flock feeding in wheat, previous crop was wheat. Last year we had loads of linnet feeding here, but the previous crop was rape. Perhaps some rape seed is still available for them (the field has not been ploughed since the rape).
