Ringing near Gifford, Winter 19-20 (1 Viewer)

Whoosh netting at rape bait station, site 1, 27.9.19

A decent flock has been drawn to feed on a fantastic stand of cornflower adjacent to the feed station, with significant numbers tempted by rape onto the catching area. Had hoped there would be some migrant linnet with this goldfinch flock, possibly including previously ringed birds, but none were seen though there are lots of linnet feeding on rape stubbles around the farm.

The retrap was ringed by another member of the group 3.75km away in January.

We also had 2 golden plover in this field a week ago (and heard our first this autumn about three weeks ago).

Many thanks to all concerned, Mike.

Our first visit of this year's "winter ringing programme". Not as good as it looks in that another robin was killed in the net by a cat and another tree sparrow killed in the net by a sparrowhawk. The cat was very surprising given the remoteness of the site.

The redwing was found tangled in a net spread over a neighbour's holly bush, presumably to protect the berries. Fortunately it had not been there long and was fine.
