Ringing near Gifford, Winter 2022-23 (1 Viewer)

Mist netting at Site 2, lower site, 13.10.22

This is the first session of our 2022-23 winter mist netting programme. We start with slight trepidation, concerned about Avian Influenza. We hope this will not affect the birds we catch and our programme will not be affected.

Our plan is slightly different this year. We intend to include both mist netting sites at Farm 1 in the BTOs Winter CES project. This requires visits to each site every two weeks, while our previous programme had a more relaxed interval of 3-4 weeks. We don't have the people to include more than 2 sites in this, and Farm 2 catches are not consistently adequate to meet project requirements. Due to lack of people this will mean that Farm 2 ringing may have to take a back seat if the weather gives too few opportunities. The winter CES project starts in November (the 5th this year) while our project has historically started in October. As we will not be ringing at Farm 1 till November we will focus on Farm 2 until then.

Another variance from normal this year is that wild bird cover on both farms is probably about as poor as it gets, certainly for cereal content. There is variation from year to year, and this year both farms (working independently) sowed late due to logistical issues, then suffered from drought. As both farms feed grain at the ringing sites it is hoped this will not have a serious impact.

Delighted to catch chaffinch here. This has been a bit of a bogey species recently here - we haven't caught any since November 2020 even though they always seem to be present, often in tens rather than singles.

Surprisingly these seem to be the first greenfinch we have ever caught at this site and we have been ringing here (with some gaps) since winter 05-06.

I really enjoy following your threads, I am a trainee at the moment, and have only had one session, but it is a remarkable experience handling the birds. I hope to be out again on Sunday, but I won't be able to post images.
