One of the retrap blackbird's ring was not one fitted by Lothian Ringing Group, though it is a UK (BTO) ring.
This blackbird was ringed in Montrose, 93km distant, on 17th January 2021 as a first winter female.

Mike.

If there is one concern about Winter CES, it is that we have to visit at too short intervals. This should be peak catching time in winter. Birds are present, in numbers, but as a flock have adopted avoidance behaviour.

The Winter CES project has ended. For mist netting that means we will extend the interval between visits as birds appear to be getting net-shy with too much disturbance. This doe not appear to affect linnets and here we will reduce the interval between visits to 7 days or so in the first instance. The reason for this is to try to pick up birds moving through. Normally about this time of year we see the proportion of retraps drop sharply, indicative of many birds moving in. We are not seeing this yet, but maximum flock size may have dropped (we don't watch all the time !) - where we were seeing 3-400 birds at times we are now seeing half that. This suggests birds may have started moving on.

The increased proportion of new birds suggests that spring migration is underway. Indeed yesterday we could see 4-500 birds on the wires over the site first thing in the morning, but by noon and for the rest of the day numbers were down to about a third of that, possibly a large departure when the weather is benign, if cold.
