Stuck in Dundee.....

Didn't feel like December at the park today with not a breath of wind and still some warmth from the sun. Got there around 11am and headed straight to the hide to watch the tide coming in. Was there for around an hour but two Greylags was about as interesting as the birds got, with only really the usual suspects in the bay. Had 3 Skylarks fly over high westwards on the move to somewhere.
Wandered round for a few hours adding species to the list but nothing too exciting. There was a mixed flock of roughly 120 Redshanks and 20 or so Dunlin roosting at the Lochan most of the afternoon. Only a small part was frozen.
Stayed for the sunset which was pretty stunning reflected in the mirror calm water of the Tay. Spotted a Fox hunting near the end of the runway at the airport for about 5 minutes as I sat at the top of the hill. Heard a rather high pitched calling Goose fly in on its own to join a small party that had landed as the light fast disappeared. Given the amount of Snow Geese around in Scotland this winter, it might be worth checking on - just in case.

36 species seen. Bar Tailed Godwit (c20), Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Buzzard, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Common Gull, Curlew, Dunlin, Dunnock (1), Goldcrest (1), Goldfinch, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose (2), Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Kestrel (1), Long Tailed Tit, Mallard, Meadow Pipit (2), Oystercatcher, Pied Wagtail (1), Pink Footed Goose, Redshank, Reed Bunting (3), Robin, Feral Pigeon, Siskin, Skylark (3), Starling, Teal, Woodpigeon, Wren.

I was in the park for 3 hours this morning, all the leaves are off the trees and the park is now in winter mode, not many small birds about but nice to see dipper back at the hide area, a single dipper (un ringed) flew back and forth in front of the hide for half an hour,as the tide came in carrion crows appeared and one crow repeatedly dive bombed the dipper,a second crow joined in and the dipper flew off under the tunnel with both crows in pursuit, I saw a second dipper (coloured ringed)on the other side of the tunnel, there was a couple of flocks of bar tailed godwits feeding in front of the hide, biggest flock was about 30 birds,i was hoping to get a better look at them when the tide cornered all the waders but a combination of a low flying heron and a passing train sounding its horn spooked all the waders

26 species seen 5 unidentified species also seen

Popped down to the park from 1130 till 1530 and managed to see a quite respectable 43 species. Lovely and sunny and not as cold as it could have been, so all in all a worthwhile visit.

When I arrived the tide was in, so there wasn't much around in the bay - 4 species of gulls (Herring, Black Headed, Common and Great Black Backed), and Teal and Mallard. A Grey Heron was roosting along towards the reeds. Picked up a small flock of Yellowhammers as they landed in the long grass on the hill, only to be disturbed by a large dog running through the vegetation. Lots of people around, some with dogs, some with children and even another 2 birders.

Found a small group of Meadow Pipits in the long grass by Buzzard Wood, and a small group of Siskins bathing in below the bushes. Greenfinches and Chaffinches, as well as Blackbirds and a Wren were also in the wood. Heard a few Redwings but didn't manage great views at any point. A Stock Dove flew over and a skein of Greyalgs headed over the Tay. Spotted a flock of waders over the airport which turned out to be Bar Tailed Godwits. Back at the bay, there were Redshanks, and a few Dunlin along with 2 Mute Swans and a Grey Wagtail. There was also a flock of 11 Goldeneyes in the bay as well as some Mallards and a Cormorant.

Further wanders found a Goldcrest behind the car park, 2 Bullfinch males at the back of Buzzard Wood, and a Pied Wagtail. 2 Reed Buntings were in the bushes at the lower corner of the hill. Greenfinch, Song Thrush, Great Tit, Robin and Woodpigeon as well as Feral Pigeons and a few Starlings made up the rest of the sightings.

The Lochan was frozen but there were around 50 or so Carrion Crows and a couple of Jackdaws around the edges. On the smaller frozen pool, there was at least one Crow which appeared to be attempting to break the ice for a drink, and from my photos it appears it may have succeeded, although it did a lot of slipping as it tried. The Kestrel was very visible, perching in trees, and hunting a few times with some success. The dark Buzzard flew over, but was ignored by the Crows perched in the trees at Buzzard Wood.

The bird scarers at the airport put up a mixed flock of Curlews and Oystercatchers which flew over the park, although they appeared to be back on the airport grass by dusk. Four Skylarks flew over, and looked like they were contemplating landing for a few seconds but flew on eastwards.

Full list - Bar Tailed Godwit (32), Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Bullfinch (2), Buzzard (1), Carrion Crow (60+), Chaffinch, Common Gull, Cormorant (1), Curlew, Dunlin (6), Goldcrest (1), Goldeneye (11), Goldfinch, Great Black Backed Gull (1), Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail (1), Greylag Goose (c20), Herring Gull, Jackdaw (2), Kestrel (1), Mallard, Meadow Pipit (7), Mute Swan (2), Oystercatcher, Pied Wagtail (1), Redshank, Redwing (3), Reed Bunting (2), Robin, Feral Pigeon, Siskin (3), Skylark (4), Song Thrush (1), Starling (1), Stock Dove (1), Teal, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer (5)

Thanks, both. :)
Happy New Year to everyone that reads, or contributes, to this thread.

Popped down to the park today for a couple of hours as part of a long walk to kick-start my yearlist. 30 species seen in the park.

As I reached the park, a Blackbird was in the trees, and Carrion Crows and Redwing were feeding in the field with the Highland Cows. What looked like a Dunnock was also visible but went un-ID'd. The bay held Dunlin, Redshank, Bar Tailed Godwits, Teal, Mallard, Grey Heron, Black Headed and Herring Gulls but was otherwise quiet. Carrion Crows and Jackdaws bathed in the burn outflow.

Feral Pigeon and Woodpigeon were seen in flight as was a calling Skylark. A couple of Song Thrushes were found, and Redwings were much in evidence although it may have been the same group of 3 birds. Spotted a couple of Yellowhammers and a Meadow Pipit near Buzzard Wood. Robin, Dunnock and Wren were seen here too. There was a flock of Carrion Crows at the Lochan, as well as a couple of Jackdaws, a few Mallard, a few Teal, a Redshank or two and 3 Dunlin. It didn't look promising for raptors but I eventually managed to catch a male Sparrowhawk, the dark Buzzard and a male Kestrel in the air above the park. Great Tit, Pied Wagtail and Long Tailed Tits were added before I headed for my next stop at Ninewells.

Herring Gull, Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Great Tit, Grey Heron, Jackdaw, Long Tailed Tit, Pied Wagtail, Redshank, Redwing, Robin, Feral Pigeon, Sparrowhawk, Woodpigeon, Wren, Bar Tailed Godwit, Buzzard, Dunlin, Dunnock, Kestrel, Mallard, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Song Thrush, Teal and Yellowhammer

Happy New Year, Delia. A 12 mile round trip, and my legs feel rather heavy now, but some not bad birds picked up en route. Not a bad start.

Small group of male Bullfinches showing really well at times feeding on seed heads. 8 Meadow Pipits feeding in the flooded field as well as a Pied Wagtail on the ice. Redwings around in small numbers again, as well as a few Song Thrushes. Got my first Peregrine and Reed Buntings of the year. 35 species seen in total. Full story on my blog....

I had my first visit of 2014 today, had to cut the visit short due to heavy rain and only seen 21 species but got off to good start to my 2014 list by finding a Iceland gull, the gull was in the bay to the left of the hide at 1.25 pm ,it was raining when I found it and I could only get poor record shots but still a nice bird for my first visit of the year, a hunting kestrel spooked virtually all the small birds at buzzard wood, only 4 male bullfinches /1 dunnock/1 great tit and some blackbirds present, when I first passed the lochan only teals /mallards and a single mute were there, the mute flew over towards fife, when I passed a second time 24 redshanks had landed plus a single stock dove, small flocks of redwings were seen just to the right of the lochan, not a single bird directly in front of the hide but a single grey wagtail was on the other side of the tunnel, the wagtail flew under the tunnel towards the bay ,it was while searching for this I spotted the Iceland gull, it was feeding/washing itself at first but then flew onto the pipe after being harassed by herring gulls

list

Great find. I've been searching for one for weeks, especially when I've been at the park. I knew one had to turn up. Wonder if it will hang around long enough for me to manage to see it at the weekend. Ian Ford is leading a guided walk from 10am on Saturday morning. Would be great if the Iceland Gull was still around for those joining the walk.

133. Iceland Gull

Grey Wagtail and Stock Dove are two others I was hoping to get at the park for my yearlist yesterday too.

I had just posted a blog article on the park too with the list as it stood at 132. Now amended crediting you with find number 133.

cheers, I was going to text you shortly after finding the gull but I was concentrating on the bird that much I never noticed my phone got wet ,I switched it off and have just switched it on in the last half hour, since seeing the kingfisher I always check the area behind the tunnel, there is only a small area to stand here, grey wagtail and dipper have flew close by me here and there is a couple of perches which might entice kingfisher

We're hoping to set up some suitable perches for Kingfisher on the bay side of the tunnel at some point. Not sure when but it is on the "to do" list....
I was stuck at work and wouldn't have been able to get down to see the gull anyway, but knowing there is one in the local area increases the chance of seeing it somewhere. Found one at Clatto a few years ago and probably the same bird turned up 3 or 4 times over the next month or two around Dundee, so fingers crossed.

Went to try for the Iceland Gull this afternoon (got away from work early), but drew a blank. Jon Cook did see the bird around 1130, but the channel was empty of gulls rather unusually when I arrived around 3pm.

Birds seen -
Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Buzzard, Carrion Crow, Common Gull, Curlew, Herring Gull, Long Tailed Tit, Mallard, Redshank, Redwing, Starling, Teal, Woodpigeon

I picked the wrong day to visit the park today, two separate dog walkers had dogs which seemed to be having a contest to see who could bark louder, one was walking between the car park/buzzard wood the other was on the hill area, a tractor was cutting the grass near the lochan the result was an empty lochan even though there was no ice,at the hide some guy was walking out onto the pipe with what I thought was a fishing rod,no gulls or waders nearby,i returned later thinking if he is quietly fishing at the end of the pipe the birds would return, the rod turned out to be a gun and he was hiding near the end of the pipe shooting something :C
only 20 species seen but still a enjoyable walk about, highlight being 20+ reedbuntings (mostly female)just right of the viewing point, reedbunting and greenfinch are new birds for my 2014 list

Hi, the guy you saw was in a voluntary no-shoot area - make what you will of those terms!

See http://www.pkc.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=11098&p=0

Might be worth trying to get hold of the local BASC rep to see what they say, though I suspect they adhere to the voluntary no-shoot policy there (good PR etc), and the guy you saw may be outwith their membership.
If that was the case, then the polis might be your next best option........
Hope that helps, SRG
