We have a rook colony in front of our house and a much larger one in a field behind us. Were in herefordshire. The rooks in front disappear from maybe October/November. The colony is empty,a couple of buzzards then hang out there. They have just started reappearing there this week on and off. But the colony at the back has had rooks all year round. I wondered why this was. ?

Hi rgabrielle,

Warm welcome to BF. 🙂

During the summer, our British Rooks roost at their breeding colony but in the autumn they join up with other colonies in the area and form large winter roosts. Your front of house Rooks may well be roosting with the other colony in the field behind you.
