Having a few days break sight seeing around Ross-on-Wye with missus. Hope to get out for a bit of birding. Are there any Dippers around this area? Also thinking of trying Nags Head reserve for Pied Flycatcher? These would be my preferred interest coming from lowland Essex but open to suggestions?
If you are going into the Forest of Dean there are decent places for Dipper.
Wenchford Picnic Parking is one such, there is a brook (Blackpool Brook) below the car park which a bit of searching up and down will usually reveal a Dipper and of course Grey Wagtail. The car park is along the road south-east of Mallard Pike Lake. Its pretty reliable but often disturbed by humans so early morning or evening perhaps best.
The Fountain Inn has a stream behind it and this also holds Dippers. Good pub, too.
Nags Head should work for Pied Flycatcher.
Have a good time. Obviously there are boars, Goshawks and other wildlife around as well to enliven your stay.
