I just came across this online gallery of work from graduates of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's Diploma in Botanical Illustration.

A really high standard of work in my layman's opinion.

Those are superb. I thought about doing a botanical art course a while back, but I really don’t think I have the patience for it. Nor the skill!

It does sound like you do need to be able to demonstrate some ability to be admitted to the course.
