Another good morning, always a pleasure to get a few hours to spend wandering around Middleton Lakes.

As widely reported, there was a Black Tern at the north end of Dosthill, which soon moved to Fishers Mill. I believe this was later joined by several more over Jubilee.

I heard a Cuckoo in the woods whilst walking towards the canal from the car park.
Two brief Cuckoo encounters, the first on the causeway between Fishers Mill and Jubilee, where it was being driven north by mobbing Black Headed Gulls, landing briefly on the fence before being forced off over Jubilee. About 20 mins later, exactly the same scenario, except this time was at the north end of Jubilee, and the Cuckoo was chased off towards the woods where I'd heard one calling earlier.

Two Ringed Plovers, three Dunlin and a Redshank at various points on Jubilee.

Frustratingly, I spoke to several people who'd seen the Little Gull "a couple of minutes ago" but didn't manage to find it myself.

Managed to locate a Lesser Whitethroat but no joy with any of the other species I was hoping I might see. Plenty still to add to my year list then.

Thanks for your help, Steve (A).

Glad you had a good visit Rob. The Black Tern numbers were up to 4 by the time I made a brief visit late afternoon here's a couple of pics.

Cheers

Steve

Congratulations to all who took part in the bird race, to break the 100 barrier is a great achievement, wish I'd been there. What we need next is the breeding reedbed species Bittern, Marsh Harrier and Bearded Tit, maybe not too far away?
The year list increased to 146 with the addition of Turnstone and Tawny Owl and the month list is on 111.
My highlights today were 3 Egyptian Geese on DL, 1 drake Pintail JWs, 1 drake Garganey FMP, 1 Hobby, 2 Dunlin, 1 Common Sandpiper, and 100's of Swift.

Highlights today were 8 Avocet chicks still on JWs river scrape, other birds on JWs included 2 LRP, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Dunlin, 1 Redshank, 6 Common Tern and a Yellow Wagtail.
A Wood Sandpiper per TP/TVB on 10/5 took the year list to 147.

Two Little Stint on the 23rd and 24th May were the 148th species for the year.
Today the drake Garganey was still on JWs and the 8 Avocet chicks continue to thrive.
I checked out the official route to the reserve on the way out and can report that it is now tarmacked all the way to the main road. 10 mph is the speed limit but 1 mph is recommended over the speed humps unless you want to damage your car or spine.

Popped in for a couple of hours this morning after half an hour listening to the Corncrake at Alvecote. Word of mouth at that location of an organised flush on Monday evening so those present could see the Corncrake - sad to hear this if it's true.

Plenty of birds around but nothing particularly remarkable at this stage in the year.
Two Garganey feeding in front of the canal-side screen on Jubilee, with at least seven Ringed Plovers and a single LRP in the same place, and a couple of Common Tern appearing to be sat on nests.
Two LRP in front of the river-side screen, being regularly shepherded away from the Avocet chicks by their parents.

There doesn't seem to be much news coming out for the reserve lately and I can't add a lot having done just two visits this month, the high water levels haven't helped either.
My highlights are:-
7/6, Shelduck and 6 ducklings, 1 Shoveler, 1 Hobby and 3 Avocets on the canal scrape (didn't check out the river scrape).
9/6, 2 broods of Shelduck 3 and 4, 1 drake Garganey in heavy moult canal scrape, 2 Shoveler, 3 Oystercatcher, 12 Avocet including 8 young river scrape, 2 LRP, probably 2 broods of Lapwing on JWs, 2 Redshank, Coal Tit on feeders and a Cuckoo was reported.
118 species were reported in May.

Things picked up today with a nice looking female Red-necked Phalarope on the river scrape JWs found by RSPB volunteer Dave Corfield, it did fly off several times but always came back (149). Also on the JWs were 1 Bar-headed Goose, 1 drake Teal, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 LRP, at least 1 juvenile Lapwing and 3 Redshank.
I was told that Egyptian Goose and Pochard both bred on DNR but soon lost all their young.

A couple of highly cropped shots of the Red-Necked Phalarope. So much more red than in my Collins guide.

I was hoping that the Cattle Egret would appear on the reserve.
It looks like a Garden Warbler to me.

Nothing "supposed" about the egret - pics on my twitter (@tamebirding) if you care to look. :)

Also you wouldn't expect groppers to be audible in June as they are busy breeding. They do have a second singing period in July though so all is not lost for this year.
