Sorry Dave that was not meant to be harsh, i should have used some italics and a smiley of some sort. I was just thinking to myself and typed it, i should have clarified the remarks and thanks for the WM stats - You see how easy it is to give the wrong impression.

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
West Mids County stats for LRP (easily accessible up to 2010 via RBBP online) as below:

2010 - 6 pairs
2009 - 5 pairs
2008 - 4 pairs
2007 - 4 pairs
2006 - 5 pairs
2005 - 4 pairs (max), 0 confirmed
2004 - 6 pairs (max), 0 confirmed
2003 - 6 pairs (max), 3 confirmed

Looks fairly stable up to 2010. No more up-to-date figures (i.e . since 2010) available.

The 2011 WMBC annual report states that 5 pairs bred in the West Midlands county (2 at Dunstall Park and 3 at Marsh Lane, raising 4 young between them)

Cogito ergo sum
No problem Laurie - I was thinking I'd done something to irritate you - we all have off days. ;)

Cheers Phil for the updated WM county data for 2011.

When i said stats i meant WM not nationally - tnx for others providing some infill (no gravel-pit pun intended;)) - locally the area below Netherton Rez, now Narrowboat Way + Industrial Estate held 3 displaying males one year with 2 pairs breeding and probably Wheatear bred and maybe even Stonechat with Netherton Hill Gorse grassland adjacent:eek!:

Not any more, they seem to be just passage birds now, do LRPs breed in the West Midlands county? Perhaps another thread as i have no wish to hijack this but it's the nature of bird-related stuff.

Laurie:t:

Fair enough Laurie. I was responding more to support Dave's earlier post regarding the often transient nature of their nesting habits. Marsh Lane must be the most stable location in the WM county, given its nature reserve status.

Interesting, Brian, i am only summising (not gut-feeling, just hunching). LRP must have been very under-recorded in the WM county with submitted records coming from possibly the same submitter from the same sites that they covered?

When i think of the huge sites that remained undeveloped for years that i looked at both in the breeding season like the one i described and sites such as the Patent-Shaft in Wednesbury which i only looked at in the Winter as it had a Golden Plover roost for a couple of seasons (and even recorded a 'wrecked' Storm Petrel:eek!: IIRC). I did'nt even submit any breeding records for the ones i found i wonder if anybody else did:C

As i stated earlier these large sites are a thing of the past. Building-type sites these days tend to be much smaller and are developed very quickly. The large site just down the road from me looked eminently suitable but it was levelled and developed in about 15 months hardly a chance for anything to be found - not even a Gull roost.

Is the Pullover still present?

I'm sure they breed/ have bred over last few years at Sandwell RSPB too

At Sandwell they try to breed every year. Successfully 2 years ago (2012) when they raised two young. But last year they never managed to settle - we guessed due to predation but never saw the evidence. This year, they were on a nest for a long time - turned out far too long and the nest was abandoned. We've had two pairs around most of the summer but again the second pair never settled properly.

I have heard from a little bird (not a SBJ)! that "they" are supposed to start work on the bridge foundations today/tuesday. We shall see. How much of the site will restricted?

The path from the South corner of Fishers Mill up to the SE corner of Jubilee Wetlands will be closed for the duration of the works, estimated at approximately 2 weeks. The RSPB will open the path as soon as possible but until then, this section of path will be fenced off and closed.

I was expecting the reserve to be flooded after last nights rain but it was OK although the river was high so levels on the JWs and NP will rise later.
The Ruff was still on the JWs with 1 Ringed Plover, 1 LRP and 2 Common Sandpiper, a juvenile Shelduck was new in.
At least one of the Stonechat was on the west side of the JWs, this is an extremely early autumn record.
A Clouded Yellow was by FMP.

Looking back to my last post things still haven't changed very much.
This morning there were 2 Ringed Plover, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Redshank, 3 Green Sandpiper, 3 Dunlin and a Kingfisher.
Yesterday 4 Ringed Plover, 3 Snipe, 1 Redshank, 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper, 4 Dunlin and a Stonechat.
18/8, 1 Garganey on NP, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 LRP, 1 Snipe, 6 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper and a Dunlin. It's not often I get to see Stonechat and Whinchat on the same day but there was one of each around the JWs.
Many Common Tern have now left and today just 4 were seen.
Geoff
