RSPB Middleton Lakes (1 Viewer)

4/11/13 DBP Jubilee wetlands m and f/imm Stonechat, 100 lapwing, Little Egret, 6 r h goosander landed then flew south, chiffchaff along the river.Peacock Butterfly.
At dusk Curlew, 4000 Starling, 8 Goosander north (6 rh and a pair), 3 Pintail south.
North pit Little Egret and Geoff Williams a pair of pintail.
Dosthill NR m Pochard and 140 Wigeon.

14/11/13 DBP North pit Pink-footed Goose with Greylags, 7 Little Egret over at dusk. RSPB Vol Louis Geeson saw a Bittern fly from Fisher's mill to Dosthill NR c3:30.

17/11/13 DBP Pink-footed Goose with 275 Grey lag Geese, Black Swan, 5 Dunlin, 3 Snipe, 240 Lapwing, 7 Little Egret, 2 Goldeneye, 10 Pochard, 3 Cetti's, 7 Herring Gull, Common Gull, 60 Goldfinch.

I visited between 8.30 and 1pm yesterday, and my favourite visit so far by a mile. The shear diversity of birds there at the minute is brilliant, and even though I couldn't identify a lot of them as an amateur, it took nothing away from the experience. At about 12.30 I walked back through the woodland trail and the noise in there was incredible. I'm assuming it was fieldfares but the shear number of them and how quickly they were moving meant I struggled to lock on to one close enough with my bins.
In hear I got my latest tick with a stunning goldcrest that let me get incredibly close.

I was left severely frustrated at not being able to identify one group of birds, that I think we're buntings of some sort. Crossing the canal and entering the wetlands, I turned a left and all to my left hand side (the canal side) were some buntings that had a really distinctive yellow ring around the eye... I have looked through the books but I'm clueless.

The reserve has so much potential. I don't think it's great for novices, their isn't much in terms of interaction and I feel a couple more feeding stations, especially one in the woods would be great.

I do have to unfortunately voice concerns over that flaming dog again though. Walking back down the path, I saw it ahead of me, with the friendly dog who is great and I turned into a 12 year old boy. As I approached I just talked in a really high pitch voice to try and befriend him.

The friendly dog took to it, but the vicious little one barked and growled. I really didn't know what to do, and I was genuinely quite frightened.

I hate to repeat myself but what happens if young kids visit...

Yes, I saw 90 Fieldfare in the woodland area Mill plantation (Warks side) yesterday early afternoon details Warks thread, you can see a few Reed Bunting on the Reserve in winter, a winter male has a ringed eye see Collins guide. Group of birds flying over to the wetlands may have been Linnet, Meadow Pipits in small groups can also fly onto the wetlands. The RSPB have a birds for beginners tour details on the Middleton lakes website.

I believe there are 3 Dogs on the farm
Dog 1 Bob Very friendly and very intelligent, frightened of other dogs, he be- friends people so he can have a walk around the Reserve.
Dog 2 Similiar looking, smaller frightened of people has barked at me a few times, have been told he has bitten 2 people 1 through a mussel
I believe there is another dog locked in the kennels.
Myself I can only take action if the dog tries to bite me, which he has not.
From the dogs point of view he does not like strangers and strangers are entering his territory the area of the farm, due to the RSPB Reserve there are far more visitors but few go through the farm which is the original footpath. However the permitted path around the paddock is considered his territory also.
The last person who got bitten an RSPB Volunteer he went to the police.

Regarding the evil dog, I've found that if you try to talk to him he barks and snarls, but if you look away or ignore him he's OK.
