RSPB Middleton Lakes (5 Viewers)

White Letter- Hairstreak

Where abouts on the RSPB map http://www.rspb.org.uk/Images/middletonlakes_tcm9-283749.pdf is Mill Plantation? I might nip up after work one day for WLH if the sun reappears.

Adam

Hi Adam,
Mill plantation is where Rookery is marked on the map it is also marked on an O.S map if you look on the site wheresthepath. There has only been 4 sightings over the years, the first by Ross John's RSPB Volunteer, 2 by myself and 1 by Ron Thomas, you have little chance of seeing the butterfly, the reason I suggest is that they hatch from the many small elms here then ascend high into the Large leave limes here, where they feed off honey dew and sun.

The Great-White Egret was on the main path by Fisher's Mill at one point this evening. Approach with care if going in morning.....

Hi All

The Great White Egret was showing well at times this afternoon, when it wasn't hiding !

A bonus on my way down to view it was leaving the RSPB car park and seeing the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker land in the old tree near to the Middleton farmhouse (1.55pm) and then watching it return about five minutes later and start drumming for 10-15 seconds, before flying off again.

Went scopeless today, so two very mediocre digibinned record-shots attached.

Cheers

Andy R.
