You can't seriously tell.me that all RSPB reserves follow the guidelines regarding feeder hygiene. Surely a lot of feeders aren't moved around as recommended, even if the feeders are cleaned any ground underneath must be teeming with dodgy bacteria etc. Same with the vast majority of local nature reserves. I totally appreciate that people love getting close to nature but not at the expense of the birds. Are Tree and House Sparrows affected much from diseases etc as obviously they are both struggling and feeding stations usually pull them.in big numbers?
I stopped feeding birds in our back yard a few years ago. I was strict about hygiene, but saw greenfinches/chaffinches with assumed Tricho. Maybe they contracted it elsewhere. But between that and the local cats, the feeders were just death-traps.
I change the feeders, clean and disinfect them every couple of days including the bird tables.
I feed little and often now to avoid stacks of mixed birds hanging about the feeders.
