The vast majority of Ruby-crowned Kinglets will appear sans Ruby crown as 1. Only males have the red crown feathers and 2. these feathers are typically concealed. Even when in the hand (such as at the banding station where I work) it is necessary to blow on the crown feathers to part them to be certain there is/is not any red. One of those technically correct, if somewhat misleading names!
