Sandwell Valley (4 Viewers)

January

The year got off to a fairly good start with 69 species seen on the 1st main Highlights being a Yellow legged Gull possible 2 birds, Common Gull and 5 Goldeneye on Swan Pool, a Jack snipe was seen on the Bund and the Cetti's warbler was heard near the Sluice, on the 2nd a Woodcock was flushed in Park Farm Wood, a Perergrine flew towards Ray Hall and 5 Whopper swans flew through, the 3rd gave us a couple of Raven over Forge Mill, Kingfisher on the river and a Pheasant on Brownies, the 8th saw a female Brambling under the Feeding station, on the 9th we had a Adult Yellow legged Gull on Swan pool and a Great Black Backed Gull was on Forge Mill, on the 10th a 1st winter bird joined the Adult Yellow Legged Gull on Swan Pool and the Cettis Warbler was in the Marsh, on the 13th the Brambling was still under the Feeders, on the 15th we had a Great White Egret on Forge Mill and a Tawny Owl was in Park Farm Wood, we had our first returning Oystercatcher on the 18th, on the 21st we had 2 Jack Snipe in the Marsh and the ringed Common Gull was on the Island, on the 24th the Cettis Warbler was still present and so was the Bramling we also had our first Linnet of the year with a bird flying over the Feeders and a second Oystercatcher arrived, the 25th gave us a Yellowhammer south over the Reserve, the first record since 28th February 2019, a Skylark over the Golf course being the first for the year and a 1st winter Yellow Legged Gull was on Swan pool, on the 28th we had a Peragrine harassing the Gulls on the playing fields near Dartmouth Park and a Skylark over the Reserve, the 29th gave us a Peregrine sat on the pylon in Monks Meadow and 2 Skylark over Swan pool, on the 30th a Jack snipe was flushed on Forge Hill, the last day of the month saw a different 1st winter Yellow Legged Gull in Dartmouth Park and the Cettis Warbler was heard calling by the sluice.

some of the best counts being :- 1000+ Redwing, 500+ Starling, 42 Fieldfare, 40 Ring necked parakeet, 37 Carion Crow, 32 Long tailed tit, 30 Siskin, 22 Chaffinch, 20 Greenfinch, 20 Redpoll, 18 Mistle Thrush,10 Bullfinch and 8 Reed Bunting

we clocked up 86 species in the month
