Thanks Kits, Wendy, Pam and Val - yes, the butterflies were in good nick and the Small Copper was in a far better condition than the only other one I'd seen close up! I'm not 100% sure if it was a barn owl from the view I got but it 'felt' like it was one... rather tantalising!

The oak woods there are nice but as it's in the common they're not untouched by any means - quite fascinating though as there are pits, embankments from Napoleonic era defences and more recent effects of the commoners and now bmx bikers. It's the woods to the north-east that are really special, tiny fragments of the ancient woodland, they are mostly hornbeam and oak and are amazing to walk through!

I have some other shots of some of those woods, I took these in November 2007 - the first is in the oak wood on the Common and the second is of the small spinney near Galleyend, to the north-east of Galleywood.

This, I'm reliably informed, is called Tamarisk and I saw it behind Chesil Beach at Abbotsbury this afternoon. For most of the year it is simply the ferm-like leaves, but these are now the flowers. It is a high shrub, up to 10 feet in places and makes a hedge, especially to the east of the car park. Interestingly, there is a Tamarisk Farm just along the coast at West Bexington.

Very pretty, Kits.

There were a lot of these around when I was picking sloes this afternoon, plus the basket of sloes I picked.

The trees are starting to change now, Kits, I love the red coloured leaves.
The butterfly you saw, Wendy, looks like a new one as well, no tatty wings.
Good basket of sloes there.

That's a nice load of sloes!

Went to Galleywood Common this morning with some local people I met via Flickr and found a lot of fungi at the old Napoleonic defences. Not sure what kind these are but they were a pretty good size.

Lovely little Goldcrest Simon. I'm still waiting for our local 'winter gang' of these happy little birds, to arrive. Won't be long now.

From this afternoon's foray for sloes...

1. Optomistic blackberry plant!

2. Haws, right next to the blackberry bush.

3&4. Oak leaves beginning to turn.
