Thanks Kits, Wendy, Pam and Val - yes, the butterflies were in good nick and the Small Copper was in a far better condition than the only other one I'd seen close up! I'm not 100% sure if it was a barn owl from the view I got but it 'felt' like it was one... rather tantalising!
The oak woods there are nice but as it's in the common they're not untouched by any means - quite fascinating though as there are pits, embankments from Napoleonic era defences and more recent effects of the commoners and now bmx bikers. It's the woods to the north-east that are really special, tiny fragments of the ancient woodland, they are mostly hornbeam and oak and are amazing to walk through!
I have some other shots of some of those woods, I took these in November 2007 - the first is in the oak wood on the Common and the second is of the small spinney near Galleyend, to the north-east of Galleywood.
