One of my colleagues returned from a course asking me to identify "a big moth" they'd found in the building where they were receiving training. Photographed of course.... very big, grey with blue underwings.... Gutted!

Someone in a moth group I'm in had photos of a moth sent to him by someone on Shetland, only an Oleander Hawk-moth! Talk about moth envy!

48 moths of 21 species this morning from an Ealing park trap. Most numerous was Box Moth (9) with several each of common species like Large & Lesser Yellow Undwerwing, Vine's Rustic, Willow Beauty & Tachystola.

Best moth was a Brindled Green outside the trap.

The temperature dipped to 5.2C last night so only a single Canary-shouldered Thorn and 2 Green-brindled Crescent in the trap this morning.

Trapped at weekend but not much to report; mainly LYU and Dusky Thorn.
But I had the rare opportunity to go trapping at a private site last week for Clifdon Nonpariel and was thankfully successful with the below beauty. An amazing beast.

A species I've only ever caught in Russia, nice one.

Rubbish here but did get my first two Lunar Underwing of the year last night.

Very much looking forward to trapping in Cyprus and if anyone can recommend any kind of moth ID resource, I'd be very gratefull.

Damned things, I've been stung three times this last month and each one has illicited a very allergic reaction with local swelling and itching for over a week in each case. These reactions are not what I've ever experienced in the past so I can only guess that as I've gotten older, just as I've developed hayfever, this increased histamine reaction is part of that?

Quick catch up - still plenty of wasps about on Thursday morning, nothing much else of note other than a Light Emerald, don't think they normally do a second go round up here, judging by the North Wales Lepidopterist website.

And then to this morning - no wasps!! Although a Hornet mimic hoverfly frit the life out of me briefly. Best of an otherwise familiar batch was a Merveille du Jour. Marvoulous indeed!!

This is THE moth, out of a list I could realistically get here, that I most want to catch.

Rubbish autumn here so far. More than usual numbers of S H Character and I too have had several Light Emeralds but a combo of high wind and cold nights has held my nightly catch to single figures for a fortnight now.

A few LYU, 2 Common Marbled Carpet, singles of Snout, Lunar Underwing, Black Rustic, Pale Mottled Willow.....but only after having to escort 2 wasps and 4 Hornets out of the trap!

A bit warmer this week at 10.2c meant 11 moths of 6 species with 2 new for the year.
