Shieldbugs. (1 Viewer)

Found a Blue Shieldbug Zicrona cearulea at Cornard Mere, my local Suffolk Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve on Saturday 7th.It was spotted purely by chance resting on a leaf of Hedge Bindweed as I walked past, interesting as I spent a good length of time there last Autumn with my sweep net hoping to locate this species without any joy.
Also on the hetnews.org site there is a vice-county distibution file where Zicrona cearulea isn't listed for VC26 - West Suffolk, so maybe a VC first?

Previous to this I swept a few Bishop's Mitre Aelia acuminata & a single Neottiglossa pusilla from the tall calcerous grassland of the Devil's Dyke adjacent to the Newmarket Racecourses on the 17th June.

Shieldbug Id

Can anyone advise on an ID for this which was taken in Lesvos, greece in May.
I assume that it is a shieldbug ?
It was quite a large insect, at least 2.5cm

It's definately NOT a Shieldbug.

I don't know what it is, I'm unfamiliar with Greek insects. Sorry,

My thoughts exactly! Appears to have elytra that meet in middle. Shape is a bit like a bupestrid, but I'm no coleopterist!

I'd agree with a Jewel Beetle (Buprestidae), possibly Capnodis sp.

I had a trip to Surrey last week, when I managed to find & photograph some shieldbugs, including a new one for me a Sciocoris cursitans. Plus an adult & a number of nyphs of Sloe Shieldbug Bolycoris baccarum plus an adult Eurygaster testudinaria. Photos of the adults attached.

You're correct- a once very rare insect that's much more widespread. I've seen a few now.

Migrating shieldbugs

I see what I think are shieldbugs offshore (150 km++) quite a bit.
I caught some and they STINK, really rather smelly things.

Enormous variety of colurs, if anyone is interested PM me and I can send some pictures. One e.g. can be found here (near the bottom of the page).

Hello Jules,

Those two insects in your URL are indeed Shieldbugs, the Birch Shieldbug to be precise. Strange as it may seem they do migrate and have been recorded offshore on Oil Rigs in the past. Keep looking, there may be different species turning up.

2 bornean shield bugs

The 1st 2 shots are of a new species discovered in 04 in Kalimantan. I saw it in Sabah this June. The 4th shot is a hopper newly classified and named for my friend Alim Biun, of Sabah Parks.

Hello Ken,

Yes, it's a late instar nymph, judging by the size of the wing buds.

I wish I got them regularly, they're very scarce around my part of Merrie England.
