For me starting a new year list is exciting. Throw away the disappointment of birds that I didn't see, but should have (or wished I saw), start fresh again. I only bird the Winnipeg area so my year list is not big, but after a awhile you start noticing trends with your records. If you don't record, then later change your mind you will be kicking yourself. As mentioned in earlier posts, life birds in your area decrease rapidly. The year list keeps the birding interesting. It is the "mundane" that keeps you birding, with a chance of a goodie. I keep a log of my visits, recording weather, time spent birding, species seen, and noticeable things. A log of yearly species, a log of life birds. The yearly list I enter into a log so I can see who I have missed !!! I can see no downside to recording your birding "life". I know it's early, but I don't write here very often. " Happy Christmas and New year" to you and families.
