Sightron "Blue Sky" II 8x32 (1 Viewer)

Well, with now more than one PM asking me which one...Theron or Sightron, here goes. Against the conventional wisdom of The Thread, the winner is...the Theron.

There is no clear optical difference of practical user significance. None...zip...zero...nada. Side by side one can nit pick some difference, which will largely come down to personal preference for color bias.

The Theron is much more comfortable to hold and use, which made the deal for me.

If they are both the same wouldn't the Sightron be a better buy since it could be bought for a lot less than the Theron which is $215.

Mine came out to pretty much same price. try adtheron as a rebate code, saves 30 bucks or so.

I am using the therons more. I notice the wider fov (or Lookssharp, is that AFOV? I have to go back to your thread & pics. It appears wider s I have the eycupes set very low, whereas the sightrons are out further. )

Anyway Steve, thanks. I was curious. I have been leaning Theron and have a sightron buyer lined up at work already, but havent committed to that yet. I'm going to do the cereal box test first.

When you are on the Predatoroptics site and you go to checkout - enter the coupon code ADTHERON and it will take off $36, so with shippping added it will total about $191.51

The decision seems more to be about ergonomics than price

$194.75 to be exact. Frank put me on to the deal.

A quick google yields that Sightron II can easily be bought for $155-175 shipped. The $155 are out of stock. I should have grabbed one when I first saw it.

easily??? links? if you can find an in-stock model for well under $200 shipped, please post it.

I think it's fair to say that the prices of the two are close enough that one is not considerably cheaper than the other, and price isn't a big factor.

Yesterday when everyone was discussing where to buy the 8x32 Sightrons, I went onto Amazon and reported a lower price of $180.42 at a website that was out of stock. When you are looking at an Amazon webpage their is a button toward the bottom to report lower prices.

I see today that Amazon has a price of $180.42 shipped for the Sightrons from OpticsPlanet

The pair I ordered showed up just a little while ago. As I was panning the mountain side off my upper deck I saw something I first thought was a flock of geese on the ground but quickly realized were too big to be that far away. I got out the spotting scope and counted 38 elk in a large open field. They are the first I've seen this year due to the lack of snow I think. I've never seen them down that low and they were only about 500yds from a ranch house below them.

But on to the Trons. Very nice. That same neutral color representation that the Rangers have. The clarity was equal but no better as far as my eyes could tell (first impression) but that's excellent. These will be my 8x go to bins for sure. I never expected them to be lighter than the Rangers however. Feels like at least a couple oz less. When Dennis said 17oz I had remembered something like 19.8 oz. so I thought he was wrong but I guess not. The size is just what I like in a bin. I'm thrilled with them.

But why the crummy rain guard and front objective lens cover? I traded out the rain guards and also the thin neck strap for a nice wide Orion I had laying around. Good to go now except for that front end. At lest it seems to fit tight but I think it will get lost soon enough unless I rig something up.

So I guess I don't have any reasons to buy more bins.:|8(||:S|

Bob,

I love your sarcasm.

:)

Would you like me to send my pair up for you to check out?

BC,

Glad to see you received them and are happy with them. Keep using them. They are one of those bins that it really takes some time to appreciate their subtleties.

;)

Frank,

You are confusing aggressive, raucous skepticism with sarcasm.;) And as to the direction of this skepticism it is not directed to you but to whoever put these binoculars on the same level with ones that cost 1500 bucks more. (In an analysis a few paragraphs long.) I never said a word about your analysis. You had plenty of comments on it. I think there are about 300 responses so far. Only one responder has pushed my skepticism button.

So rest easy here. You brought to our attention what appears to be a very fine binocular at an entry level price. But note that it did not take me much time at all (if any) to appreciate the subtleties of my 10 x 32 EDG. It has taken me longer to appreciate the subtleties of my $230.00 7 x 42 Leupold as compared to my 7 x 42 Leica Trinovid BN but I have concluded, never the less, that it is a very good binocular for it's price.

They will get a full workout in the next several days. Some rain coming in so they will see that too. Then I'll know more but I'm already mostly convinced. I love the size and views and now I won't likely have to spring for the Rangers in 8x. These could easily end up being my favorites. I'll have more to say in another day or so.

I wonder if you could loop a little thin cord through it and attach it to the binocular. The objective cover actually fits pretty good but I can see myself losing them. I don't think there is enough room to put tethered covers on the objective covers anywhere.

I attached a small black cord from the front lens cover to the bino strap. Hangs down a little bit but is not in the way and wont accidentally get pushed back up over the lens like some of mine do when I'm hiking. I think that will work. You could use a rubber band too and that might even work a little better. I might try that later.

These blue sky have got me wondering if anyone has experienced any of the upper priced sightron bins? I noticed that they have some in the $5-600 range. Has anyone tried them? They might be very good. I'm toying with the idea of getting a pair of their compact reverse porro's as I still want a pair of them because I'll likely sell off the Raptor's due to the stiff focuser, they have a decent FOV and likely good optics.
