When I download photos to my computer after using my 7D and sigma 500. The info tells me it's a canon 400 f5.6. I realise that I shoot at 5.6 a lot of the time. My question is- does this mean the camera could be using the wrong info for my lens and therefore the raw image is not as it should be? I do know I always have to add a little contrast. Regards. Mike

Hi Mike,
Thats a bit strange. My 7D reports the lens correctly. Have you upgraded to the latest Canon firmware ? I;m still using the original firmware (the firmware the 7D came with when they first started shipping them). Maybe a newer firmware version is the problem?
I cant see RAW files suffering as a result of the incorrect reporting but I wonder if exposure would suffer if you were to shoot at anything greater than f5.6 - ie would the camera know the aperture was actually say f4.5?
Another issue may be if you use any lens distortion correction. It may apply the Canon distortion parameters rather than the sigma one. I think in lightroom however you can change the actual lens distortion parameters to be used manually. Have a look at the Sigma site or drop them a line and ask if they are aware of any issues in this regard
