This skull was found at the base of a tree in Colne, Lancashire, UK
I would appreciate any information anyone could give which would help to identify this wee beast.

Well, I've looked at the pictures, it's really hard to tell. A picture showing the length of the skull would be helpful.

It's not a squirrel, and unless you have really HUGE rats, it's not a rat skull.

By taking away what we know it's not, it could be a groundhog, nutria, or beaver? Beaver's front teeth have a yellow/brownish enamel. I don't see that on this skull, but the enamel will flake off over time, in the weather and all.

Rodent's teeth grow the lifetime of the animal.

Let me ask, was the skull found near water?
