Would I be correct in calling this a Slavonian Grebe - seems to have flatter head structure and a clear loreal stripe which helps distinguish it from the other contender, Black-necked Grebe. Many thanks.

Thanks for this, much appreciated. I got the family right (!) which is more than I can say for the Smew and Hooded Merganser which were also present but which also had me thinking they were grebes on account of the similarities of the merganser to the little grebe ... ok at a distance!

Thanks, glad I posted ......maybe time to pack it in!

We all make mistakes (and believe me I have made some real humdingers in my time). As long as we learn from them and are not afraid to admit to them it can only help us to become better birders in the long run.

Never say die and don't be afraid to ask.
