Smallish wader seen at Barnstaple in Devon (1 Viewer)

A friend spotted this yesterday alongside the River Taw. sorry for poor image, slightly larger than a turnstone was my impression. Any ideas on what it might be? Was also interested to see about a dozen Oystercatchers and a Whimbrel. All fairly close to the old town bridge.
