It was hard to tell what was going on Julie, my wife was sure there were two, it (or one of them) seemed to have got stuck between the decking, I suspect a Wall Lizard had been caught, it’s a favourite prey of Smooth Snake here.

I'd say definitely two, they aren't even the same colour and you can see both front and back ends of the left one. Also looks like the one on the right may have recently cast its skin hence brighter colours and glossier appearance?

Thanks John, I should have known the memsahib is always right (even though, like nearly everyone around here she had immediately cried “eek, des vipères”!).
