Wow, another great morning birding ....

228 - GREEN HERON !!!
229 - Twite.
230 - Eider.

We had totally awesome views of the heron, just 40 odd feet away, right out in the open plus 3 or 4 good close views of it in flight - a stunner !!!

Today I added two more highly sought-after life birds: Snow Bunting and Lapland Longspur. Last winter I spent many hours driving around fields and walking through fields looking for these species with no luck, making today all the sweeter!

2 more in Sussex yesterday, to put me on the verge of a double century in the county (now on 198). Unfortunately, missed a Leach's Petrel (would have been a Sussex first) by about 10 min.

216. Spoonbill
217. Black Redstart

16 more to go (984)

Brings my ABA year to 306 and World to 600.

275: GREEN HERON - stunning bird! Brilliant views, on the deck, stalking prey, in flight - just go and see it if you can!
276: BLACK SCOTER - not quite in the same league (though I guess almost as rare), but still a lifer, and showed fairly well.

A rare day with two lifers!

One more year/life bird today...the Black-backed Woodpecker at Ferd's Bog in the Adirondack's of New York. I was hoping for a Gray Jay or Boreal Chickadee (pretty sure I heard this bird for the second time in my life, but as I've never actually seen one I refuse to count it), but I only saw six species TOTAL in four hours of hiking around. The great, close looks at the woodpecker partially made up for this, at least.

332. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD (lifer!)

A lady in Brighton spotted a hummingbird at her feeders in early October after her other hummingbirds left. She assumed it was just a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, so she just kept feeding it. However, a few days ago when it became colder, she became concerned about it and called the local hummingbird expert. He came out and banded it, and identified it as a Rufous Hummingbird. He then reported it online, and I and other birders were able to go and see it.

Horned Grebe, Hooded Mergabser and Horned Lark made appearances Sunday.

I get more birds going with a group. But we drive down this gravel road and only the lead car gets to see Horned Larks, plus a few passengers in the second car. I got both video and stills of the larks. Only lost them after a Park Ranger truck passed me.

Here is my H Grebe with Am. Coots. Have not posted any here yet.

Just got back from 3 days in Norfolk, picking up 4 more:

311: Pomarine Skua
312: Twite
313: Ross's Goose
314: Shorelark

And with a supporting cast of 8 Red-throated Divers, Great-northern Diver, 35+ Snow Buntings, stunning male Brambling, 1000s of Pink-feet, Green-winged Teal, Red-necked Grebe and hordes of Fieldfares in off the sea, it was a very good weekend, marred only by the fact that we only found out about the Little Swift after it had gone!

Where exactly is Ferd's Bog? My parents have bought a Cabin by the shore of Lake Sacandaga, also in the Adirondacks. And since I knew that this was a state park, I have been trying to find the same birds you mentioned, with no luck yet.

Anyhow, my year lsit is now at 98, with the addition of 5 more birds.

94. Hairy Woodpecker
95. Hooded Merganser
96. Northern Flicker
97. American Black Duck
98. Wood Duck

None of the above were lifers, but never saw a Northern Flicker this late in the year... When the summer ended, I gave up looking for the Flickers this year...

Hope to break 100 in the next couple of days. If I do, I'll set a last-minute goal of 105-110 year birds.
