A trip to Ecuador has boosted my year list, not as extensively as Mark Harper's though, who incidentally I met briefly at Tandayapa Bird Lodge. Small world.

Brazos Bend

This morning at Brazos Bend State Park added:
186. Purple Gallinule.

It wasn't a great morning for birds but we still saw quite a good variety. Among the most common larger birds in the park were Little Blue Heron, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and White Ibis. We saw only two large alligators but there were young ones everywhere.

A day out on the prairies added 9 yr birds to my ABA list bringing it to 186. Much higher winds than forecast kept a lot of birds down in the grasses and silent. Looks like I'll have to make another trip to catch the one's I missed.
American Goldfinch
Brewer's Sparrow
Chestnut-collared Longspur
Eastern Kingbird
Grasshopper Sparrow (lifer)
House Wren
Lark Bunting
Lark Sparrow
Western Kingbird

Best sighting of the day was a doe Pronghorn with a newborn, wobbly legged, fawn. Total of 14 Pronghorns seen for the day.

Birds are definitely getting harder to come by. After birding hard most of the day, I only added three new ones to my Year List. Now up to 587.

585. Henslow's Sparrow
586. Upland Sandpiper
587. Bobolink

In addition to the birds listed above, I added Ring-necked Pheasant to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists.

Newest year bird came on Tuesday, while scouring my favorite warbler patch in the Adirondacks of New York.

I was walking by the side of a dirt road when a Hermit Thrush flew out from the leafy ground. An hour later, walking back home, same thing happened in the same exact spot. So I thought, maybe she's got a nest. So I look around, and sure enough right on the edge of the road was a very well camouflaged nest with 4 turquoise eggs.

47: Hermit Thrush (earliest ever, and first nesting individual)

Drove to extreme southwestern Indiana to the point where Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky meet to bird one of the world's northernmost cypress swamps. My main target was Fish Crow, which would have been an Indiana lifer. I also hoped to find Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. Dipped on both targets, but I did add one new bird to my Year List. Now up to 588.

588. Least Tern
