999 Grasshopper Warbler

Having heard several it was good to finally see one this morning on my local patch. Just one to go, but what will it be?

Drove six hours round-trip to north-central Indiana to chase a mega rarity. I got my target, as well as another bird that I can only see in the northern part of the state. Now up to 590.

589. Western Kingbird
590. Black-capped Chickadee

There's a pair of Western Kingbirds nesting in a tree along side of the road in front of a farmhouse. It's only the third nesting of the species in the state. It's also a state lifer (number 276), my eleventh of the year.

This morning I drove to nearby Daviess County for Loggerhead Shrike, which would be an Indiana state lifer. I found my target, which was number 277 on my Indiana state list. Although not a year bird (I saw it in Florida last week), it was year bird number 202 for my Indiana year list.

Slow progress

Now that it's in the 90s F every day, it's getting tough birding around Houston. However, I got my 2007 US list to 195 and my US life list to 391 with 3 new birds this week:

Dickcissel (A life bird I've been looking for for a while)
Northern Bobwhite (Another lifer)
Wood Stork.

Later today we're heading to Galveston, Bolivar and San Bernard for the weekend. I'm hoping for some shorebirds and perhaps a rail or two!
